Being “small” has never been an obstacle for Taiwan. Rather, the lack of size has fostered nimbleness and a knack for customization. The nation may have a small population, but its Cloud Gate dance company has performed on international stages for 40 years. The island has cultivated internationally renowned film directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien and Ang Lee. Taiwan may be small, but it’s small and exquisite, small and eye-catching.
Taiwan Panorama reported on many “small good things” in 2014. Small and medium-sized enterprises are the backbone of Taiwan’s economy. Quite a few firms with little name recognition have achieved great success in their fields of expertise. They are Taiwan’s “hidden champions.” The magazine made reports on ApexBio, Hiwin Technologies, Sheico, Merida, Elan Microelectronics and other SMEs. These are Taiwan’s little giants, showing how great success can indeed come in small packages.
In 2014 we also introduced Taiwan’s small-scale agriculture and small towns. The future of small farming in Taiwan is local, organic and pesticide free. And don’t forget the boundless charms of towns such as Lukang with its red brick alleys, Yujing with its mangoes, and Yuanli with its rush weaving. Small they may be, but these are good things and places, and we were happy to introduce them to you.
