Nu Wa, depicted as having a snake's body and the head and torso of a woman, was kind to all living creatures. When the hot-tempered Kung Kung, god of water, lost his fight with Chu Jung, god of fire, he was so furious that he bumped his head against the pillar that holds up the sky, breaking the heavens and cracking the earth, and causing a calamity for all the people. Nu Wa's heart ached when she saw all the suffering. She therefore melted stones of five colors to mend the sky, stopped the floods with the ash of burned reeds, took the feet of a giant turtle to make new pillars for the sky, and killed the black dragon to improve the people's lot. Finally the earth recovered to become what it is today. The legend of Nu Wa has been passed down from generation to generation.
