Hsu Chuan-cheng, amateur photographer. Born in Taoyuan in 1940, graduated from Tatung High School in Taipei.
Running a hardware store is the occupation that was thrust on him; photography is an avocation he couldn't bear to give up.
He fell in love with photography at age 17. With no money to buy a camera, he had 10 borrow one from a friend. At age 30 he married--and bought his first camera. He still remembers the price: NT$1,560.
At age 34, he won a gold medal at the 1974 Brazil International Photography Exhibition with a work entitled "Mischievous Children." This first gold medal of his encouraged him to take part in more international photo exhibitions and ended his family's opposition to his taking pictures.
"Whenever I hear the shutter go click, I feel good all over," Hsu says. "I take better care of my camera than I do of my wife!" Thirty-five years hare passed like a day, and Hsu still devotes most of his energy in his free time to photography, heading up in the hills early each morning with his camera to take pictures of insects. His diligence has paid off in achievements to be proud of.
● His photos have won 21 first prizes, 30 second prizes, 34 third prizes and 60 honorable mentions in all, with more than 500 selected for entry.
● Named photographer emeritus at the BSC International Photo Exhibition in Hong Kong.
● Named on honorary fellow of the Chinese Photography Society in the U.S.
● Named an honorary exhibitor at the Hong Kong 35 mmps International Photography Show.
● President of the Charity Photographic Society.
The following are some fine works by Hsu Chuan-cheng with insects as a theme. He began by concentrating on scenes of insects mating and gradually expanded to shoot them in other activities. Some of the interesting scenes he has captured are presented here, divided into the two themes of mating and capturing prey.

Survival of the Fittest
In a world where the weak fall prey to the strong the struggles are all for one simple purpose--survival.
Please Don't Disturb
With all of nature as their honeymoon suites and tender green leaves as their beds, pairs of insects celebrate their wedding nights amid flowers and greenery. How romantic!
