When Yang Tu, a reporter covering the democracy movement in Peking, was thanking the doctors and nurses who saved the life of his colleague Hsu Chung-mao, they said they didn't want thanks--"We just want you to report the truth!"
After June 4, we altered our original topics to do a "Cover Story" on the massacre in Tienanmen Square. It was decided to display the real events through a chronology and photographs to look at what the media did for the democracy movement, and to present an in-depth report on how economic relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits will be affected.
Compared with the repression of the democracy movement in the mainland, the vitality of the post-martial law ROC is even more obvious. While there are many difficulties, the ROC's general direction will not change. We present several reports on post-martial law phenomena, including "Special Features" on manpower and literature.
Further, the convening of the Second Plenum of the Thirteenth Party Congress of the Kuomintang and the appointment of Mr. Lee Huan as premier both show the ROC moving toward a new stage.
In order to protect the identity of Chinese in the photos on the mainland democracy movement, we have given the photos special handling.
We deeply regret the need to devote a "Cover Story" to the bloody repression of our mainland compatriots; we hope this will be the only time we need to do so.
