The island of Taiwan is home to around 410 species of butterflies.
Taiwan is situated on the border of two of the major regions into which entomologists divide the world, and its insects combine the special characteristics of both. In addition, the island was formed in geological isolation and evolved a number of unique in digenous species. Its butterfly specimens, as a result, are extremely rich and varied.
With their multifarious types and variegated colors, butterflies have long been a favorite subject for photographers.
Lin Chih-ch'eng is an amateur photographer and a member of the ROC Shellfish Society, currently employed by the Taiwan Fertilizer Company. This issue we present some of his choice pictures of butterflies, photographed over many years, as a treat for our readers.
