Ⅰ.
Soaring eagles galloping horses
Don't say we're in a hurry to rush off
over mountains high and waters deep:
"Trees want stillness" but the wind never stops!
Forty years of hoping fruitlessly to cross
--are a wait of such bitter anguish
that some of the verdant green of family feelings
has withered on the branch of waiting.
The wanderer's wheels desperately chase the setting sun
hoping to catch the glow of sunset before the dark
and comfort the sorrowing hearts of loved ones at the door
"Children want to care for their parents" but perhaps they may be gone !
Ⅱ.
In the land of my birth that has suffered without end
let me sing the praises of family feelings and their fine decency
as wild waves never seen in the human sphere
surge on the abyss of the world below
the feelings seem mute, shattered, and still as death.
I recall the grandfather clock of my childhood home the wanderer's heart like its swinging pendulum
has ticked away restlessly and helplessly through the years
unable to cease even in my dreams
a rhythm yet more ponderous for the still of the night!
(If they had been voluptuous, evanescent roses
they would have faded in color and lost their scent
or been torn up roots and all
their pomp extinguished, beauty gone)
but ever-hardy family feelings running in one continuous line from the old family tree
with its gnarled and twisted roots through
generation after generation of fathers and forebears
watered with sweat and tears
have closed a gulf that the sea couldn't drown
As the blood ties of family feelings spread across the land and long-parted wanderers throng the roads
harboring the precious wine of family feelings the nation is charged with incomparable vitality!
"Liar Ch'i" tells the story of a liar in Lukang at the time of the Ch'in g dynasty. In order to manifest the "local color," Wang Chia-chu used the red color scheme beloved by the Chuanchow people of Lukang.
Lucy Chen used her rich imagination to depict her "green camel." The little ones will have to keep a sharp eye!
