What makes a good photo?
"It tells a story."
"It raises a question."
"It's truthful, vivid, out of the ordinary--an image that's hard to forget."
"It grasps the moment!"
A good photograph is hard to take. Nonetheless, in this issue's cover story, "Outstanding Press Photos of 1987," we've collected the best photos taken in the ROC over the past year relating to news events in politics, economics, sports, the environment, medicine, education, and other areas.
These records of contemporary history were carefully selected by us over the past three months from nearly a thousand photos as a gift to you for the New Year.
Liang Shih-chiu, a literary master renowned overseas as well as in China, passed away in November. In commemoration of this giant of letters whose literary achievements began back in the May Fourth Movement of 1919, Sinorama conducted a Seminar on the Literary Achievements of Liang Shih-chiu, which is reported on in our article "The Great Master--Liang Shih-chiu Has Not Left Us."
Other important articles in this issue are "Korea's Overseas Students in the ROC," "Where Have All the Workers Gone?" and "Fine Ceramics--The 'New Stone Age.'" "Sunset in Locke Town" is a continuation from last issue of our series of overseas reports. A new feature, "Prose of the Masters," begins this issue with an extract from Liang Shih-chiu's essay "Sketches of a Cottager."
