A collection of over 200 works by 20 top Taiwanese photographers is on display in Beijing and Shanghai. Entitled On the Other Side, this is the first major exhibition of Taiwanese work to be shown in China in years, and it has caused a sensation.
Photography in Taiwan has a history of nearly 150 years. The pieces in this exhibition cover three generations of modern Taiwanese--the elderly, the middle aged, and the young--and in creative perspective, content, and technique reveal the main threads of Taiwan's growth and evolution.
Amongst the photos are some that call to mind traditional Chinese painting, while others record the life of the common man. Some artists employ a naturalistic photographic style, using a more objective, documentary approach to recording Taiwan's evolution, while others take a more subjective view. This wide range of perspectives and approaches gives audiences a comprehensive view of Taiwan's evolution since the middle of the 20th century, and is well worth a look.
