There's a 40-year history of chrysanthemum farming in Tunglo Township. Chrysanthemums can be used as medicine, brewed into tea, or served as a dish.
They grow on the sunward slopes of the Chiuhu Plateau, with high humidity and wide temperature variations between day and night, plus slightly acidic red soil. The favorable climate and geography have made the area the largest producer of chrysanthemums in Taiwan.
The chrysanthemum season is around November each year. Some use "autumn snow" as a metaphor for the chrysanthemum, because the small yet rich white flowers bloom overnight, covering the ground like a sheet of snowflakes. Golden chrysanthemums bring further heights of extravagance: walking among fields of gold as far as the eye can see with the delicate fragrance borne by a gentle breeze is a delight indeed.
