An English photographer named John Thomson came to our island (then known to the West as “Formosa”) 142 years ago and, using the “wet collodion process,” recorded this unique beauty in its raw state. Pioneering Taiwanese photographers like Fang Ching-mian, Chen Keng-pin, and Yu Ju-chi carried on this mission, and modern photographers including Tung Min, Chuang Ling, Mike Chuang, Hsu Jen-shiu, and Chi Po-lin have employed fast burst, aerial, and other techniques to continue adding to the photographic record of the mountainous majesty and riverine grace that define this island.
Through their lenses, Taiwan’s landscapes cannot fail to dazzle and impress.
