Interest in folk dancing in the Republic of China has expanded rapidly in recent years as a result of government promotion and private efforts. The forms and techniques of the Chinese folk dance also have seen some changes due to the influence of the modern dance and ballet of the West. Miss Hsu Hui-mei's folk dance presents a new style and appearance to the audience. She believes that forms and movements of our current folk dance are a bit too monotonous and insipid, lacking something. For innovation, she has collected materials on ways of expressing the national spirit of the Chinese people in local dances, including those in the border regions of China. Thus, a new form of folk dance emerges.
The folk dances that Miss Hsu Hui-mei arranges deal with the most common subjects. But she uses new concepts and different treatments to present local dances of various areas, such as the Heavenly Ladies Strewing Flowers, Flower Drum Dance, the Little Puppet Guardians, Longing for the Spring Breeze (a Boy Friend). The Bow Dance, Dance of Sinkiang, the Golden Ring Dance, Grassland Scenes, and the Village throughout the Year. Each number impresses the audience with clear, fast rhythm, graceful movements and lively designs. Music also goes well with the dancing atmosphere. For the past three years, Hsu Hui-mei has been a dance advisor to the Youth Goodwill Mission of the Republic of China, which toured abroad presenting programs of Chinese culture. She is credited with major contributions to the development of the Chinese folk dance.
