Mt. Hohuan is one of the five highest mountains of Taiwan, with an elevation of 3,394 meters (about ll,031 feet). Mt. Hohuan is the third highest, after Mt. Morrison and Mt. Snow. It is a place for enjoying snow scenes, as well as a popular summer resort. A sub-tropical and tropical climate makes most of Taiwan quite warm in all seasons. Unless one goes to the high mountains, he can hardly see snow. The temperature on Mt. Hohuan is usually 10 to 15 degrees centigrade (50-59°F) lower than that on the plain. It is 14°C (57°F)in summer and 5°C (41°F) in winter. Snow starts falling in December and melts in April. It takes three hours to drive from Taichung to Ts'ui Feng, where visitors must obtain entrance permission. Then they take a small bus to K'un-yang and walk to Wu Ridge. In winter, the whole mountain is covered with snow, so beautiful that it resembles the scenery of Northern China.
Aiding the development of the booming tourist industry, the Taiwan Forestry Bureau is building a playground to help visitors enjoy Mt. Hohuan without impairing its beauty. The Pine Snow Tower, the Hohuan Hostel and the skiing field were completed as scheduled. The ski path is 400 meters long, with cable cars connecting the peak and the bottom. Tourists and ski lovers can reach the top by taking the cable car. Each winter, many people travel to Mt. Hohuan. They enjoy themselves so much that they even ignore the cold weather. It is an ideal place for winter sports. The China Youth Corp and the military Winter-Training Center hold many activities here each year.
