● New York has a higher cost of living than other areas of the U.S., so students should be prepared. Job opportunities, on the other hand, are also higher than they are in many other areas.
● New York's high crime rate is frightening, but precautions can be taken to reduce the risk. Two of the more important are carefully selecting living quarters (on campus or in Queens) and paying attention to daily habits (avoid walking alone or using an automatic teller at night).
● Public transportation in New York is extremely convenient, so nondrivers can get by quite happily.
● If you're interested in making friends, studying English, or taking part in cultural activities, you may wish to become a member of the International Center in New York, an organization dedicated to helping immigrants and foreign visitors from around the world familiarize themselves with all that New York has to offer. Besides taking part in numerous activities, members can purchase tickets to many shows and performances for a nominal fee.
● Finally, many museums have free visiting hours. Just ask.
