They were the first generation of artists after the war to study abroad. In the early 1960s, three young men, Shaih Li-fa, Chen Tsing-fang and Liao Hsiou-ping--The Three Musketeers of Paris--made a pact that in Paris they would take the world by storm. Together they toiled in vineyards as laborers, and each found a path of his own in the world of art.
In the 30 years since, two of the three individually left Paris for New York, and in early May they returned to Taiwan. Shaih Li-fa is busy preparing "An Exhibit of Documents of the Early Art Movement in Taiwan," while Chen Tsing-fang is busy with a traveling show. Although they have returned for different reasons, here in the land of their roots they both have things to say and do.
