The representative office of the ROC in the U.S. recently indicated that according to the "new passport regulations" students sent abroad as children may apply to ROC overseas units for a new passport, valid for six years, which allows unlimited returns to Taiwan. As for many of those whose passports have long expired and who could not apply for a new one, the new regulations provide considerable convenience. What must be noted is that for male students, after acquiring the new passport and returning to Taiwan, their military service problem must still be handled according to the relevant military service regulations.
Male students sent abroad when young and who now have Overseas Chinese status may apply for an Overseas Chinese passport and need not have any military service restrictions upon returning to Taiwan.
