During the Era of Warring States, a man called Yueh Yang found a piece of gold one day and happily brought it home.
His wife was less than pleased, not knowing where it came from, so Yueh Yang returned the gold to the spot where he had found it.
Afterwards, Yueh Yang went away to study. He returned home a year later, and found his wife weaving cloth.
When she realized Yueh Yang came back without completing his studies, she grabbed a pair of scissors and cut all the threads in the loom.
She said, "cloth is put together thread by thread, inch by inch. If you cut it in the middle, all your effort will come to nothing. You went away to study and then stopped in the middle of your work. Isn't that just like cutting thread when it's still in the loom?"
Yueh Yang felt remorseful and left to resume his studies. He returned years later when his studies were completed.
The story, recorded in the biographies of famous women section in the History of the Latter Han, reminds us not to do things half way.
