According to the Overseas Scholars and Students Service Center under the National Youth Commission, in September of this year the Executive Yuan approved an adjustment for subsidies for travel expenses for students from some areas to come to the ROC The new standards are, respectively: for the western U.S. and Canada, NT$15,000; for the central U.S. and Canada, NT$18,000; for the eastern U.S. and Canada, NT$21,000; for Central America, NT$24,000; for South America, NT$34,000. The center indicated that the former standards were calculated according to the price of airline tickets in 1983, and have already been in place for 6 years. But in recent years the exchange rate of the NT against the US dollar hascontinually changed, and therefore the originally set subsidies for the U.S. and Canada became somewhat too high, and the subsidy standards for the U.S., Canada, and Central and South America have been somewhat lowered. The subsidies for other areas have thus far not changed.
