To celebrate the centennial, Taiwan Panorama reported on the visa-free travel agreements that Taiwan had already signed with more than 100 nations. By signing an agreement with the European Union, Taiwan added visa-free entry to 57 countries and territories at a stroke. The Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement with mainland China, signed in June 2010, took effect in early 2011. Just half a year later, it was already bearing fruit. Also, many couples took advantage of the numerically auspicious year to get married.
In July 2009 Kaohsiung hosted the World Games, and in September Taipei hosted the Deaflympics. In 2010 and 2011 the capital followed up with the Taipei International Flora Exposition and the Taipei World Design Expo. The World Games represented the first time Taiwan had hosted a major general athletics event. The Flora Expo, meanwhile, was both a major international-level show and entirely “made in Taiwan.” Apart from demonstrating Taiwan’s logistical prowess, these large international events also helped lift Taiwan’s image in the international community. They were perfect stages on which to market Taiwan’s culture and creativity.
Happy centennial, Republic of China! May you rise ever higher and meet an ever brighter future!
