In an article on New York City's thirty-some colleges and universities, the Village Voice characterized New York University this way: "NYU is perhaps best known for its straight-to-the-point curriculum, which includes film, television, nursing, radio, medicine, hotel management, nutrition, and graphic arts, each with facilities and space to meet the dimensions of the subject, and backed with the resources of a major research university."
● NYU consists of 14 schools and colleges, including arts and science; business and public administration; law; medicine; dentistry; social work; and education, health, nursing, and the arts.
● The largest contingent of foreign students is Chinese. During the fall 1986 semester, 289 of the university's 1,918 foreign students were Chinese, 110 of them from Taiwan.
● The university has 12 dormitories, with a total capacity of 6,000.
● It has four theaters, five dance halls, and 80 film cutting rooms on campus.
● It has over 250 campus clubs and organizations.
● Students may enter most colleges and schools in the university during either the fall or spring semester. Most graduate students can take credit classes during the summer.
● The minimum TOEFL score required for admission varies from department to department, but students with scores of 500 or higher may generally apply. Students from non-English speaking countries must take a test of their English language ability upon admission to determine whether they need to take further English language classes.
