It played a role in making Taiwan a major source of the world’s Mando-pop, nurturing the rise of the campus folk music movement in the 1970s, and helping cultivate the present-day flowering of independent music. It also fostered the development of New Taiwan Cinema, which leapt into the international limelight in the 1980s and made household names of directors like Hou Hsiao-hsien and Edward Yang. When the 2008 release of Cape No. 7 sparked a resurgence in Taiwanese film, Taiwan Panorama was there to document it, as it has been for all of these exciting developments across the decades.
The entry of women into the political arena—from the 1980s tenure of British prime minister Margaret Thatcher to Taiwan’s 2000 selection of its first female vice president, Annette Lu, and on to Germany’s present-day chancellor, Angela Merkel—has inspired social change around the world. Taiwan Panorama has tracked this social progress both at home and abroad. Our July 2012 feature on the “iron ladies” of Taiwanese politics, who have been winning over the public with their fresh perspectives and administrative expertise, is a case in point. Presciently from today’s perspective, we even interviewed two women who have been in the spotlight in the current presidential campaign—“atypical academic” Tsai Ing-wen and “little chili pepper” Hung Hsiu-chu—for the feature.
