President Yen Chia-kan swore in six government officials and military officers at the Armed Forces Officers' Club during the monthly meeting held in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen April 29. Those taking the oaths of office were Control Yuan President Tai Yen-hui, Control Yuan Vice President Han Chung-mo, Education Minister Lee Yuan-zu, Personnel Minister Teng Chuan-kai, General Hao Po-tsun, deputy chief of the General Staff, and General Wang Tuo-nien, commander-in-chief of the Combined Service Forces. President Yen urged them to dedicate themselves to the national recovery and reconstruction.
U.S. Senator John Sparkman, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, arrived at Taipei April 16 with a 10-member congressional mission for a 24-hour visit. American Ambassador Leonard Unger and Vice Foreign Minister H. K. Yang met them at the airport. The American law-makers called on ROC government leaders and exchanged views during their short stay. U. S. Congressman Lester Wolff, chairman of the House Sub-committee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs, visited the Republic of China with a 27-member mission April 19. Premier Chiang Ching-kuo and (right: with Mrs. Wolff) Congressman Wolff exchanged views on Sino-American relations.
Mario Augusto Sandoval Alarcon, Vice President of Guatemala, ended a nine-day visit to the Republic of China April 25. Premier Chiang Ching-kuo and government officials went to the Sungshan Airport to see him off. Vice President Sandoval was invited to participate in the 10th WACL and 23rd APACL conference, and delivered a speech during the opening ceremony. While in Taiwan, he called on government officials and visited cultural and economic establishments. Before his departure, Sandoval reassured his hosts that his government will firmly and fully support the Republic of China, because the two countries are both staunchly anti-Communist.
Defense Minister Gen. Kao Kuei-yuan decorated Gen. Marcial Samaniego, visiting Defense Minister of the Republic of Paraguay, with the medal of the Order of Resplendent Banner at the Ministry of National Defense April 26. Gen. Samaniego, on behalf his government, in turn decorated Gen. Kao with a medal for his outstanding military contributions. Paraguayan Ambassador Timoteo Alvarenga, Deputy Defense Minister Feng Chi-tsung and Gen. Wang Sheng, Director of the General Political Warfare Department of MND, also were present. Samaniego exchanged views on the world situations with Republic of China military leaders and praised their country's strong combat capability.
