A hospital is a complex organization which requires of its director managerial as well as medical expertise. Dr. Chu Ping-chih, director of the Combined Services Hospital is well qualified for the task.
Dr. Chu, 56, graduated from the Ministry of Defense Medical School as an endocrine specialist. As well as stressing scientific management, Dr. Chu also believes that the personal touch is important.
While Dr. Chu prohibits his staff from "moonlighting" he has taken various measures to improve their working conditions. Surgeons are paid NT$20,000 (US$500) a month and receive annual bonuses ranging between NT$25,000 and NT$120,000. "This doesn't compare well with private hospitals," says Dr. Chu, "but it is a little better than at most public hospitals."
Under Dr. Chu's directorship, modern equipment has been acquired and doctors are being given the opportunity to engage in research or overseas studies, making the hospital a leader in its field.
