At the National Central Library in 2014, the number of visitors was up by 60,000 from the previous year, the number of times that people borrowed books increased by 590,000, and the number of books borrowed went up by 1.49 million volumes. These figures show that there are plenty of people in Taiwan who hunch down over books as well as mobile devices.
The libraries of today’s new age go beyond traditional lending services. Their reading spaces are continually being upgraded, sophisticated green buildings are getting built, some libraries now provide 24-hour service, and many others have adopted universal design to ensure that library services are accessible to one and all. These changes have proven very popular and given libraries a high profile—so high, in fact, that some are now seen as places “to see before you die.”
