In commemoration of the fifth passing anniversary of the late President Chiang Kai-shek, a "Self-Reliance Flower Arrangement Exhibition" was held jointly by the Flower Arrangement Association of the Republic of China and the Central Daily News at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.
Chairman of the association Lin Hsiu-teh, said that the exhibition was the largest and best of its kind held in the Republic of China. Specially designed and illuminated display tables helped to show off the floral art works to their best effect.
With the improvement in living standards in the Republic of China, the art of flower arrangement has become more popular. Though most of the 5,000 members of the Flower Arrangement Association are housewives, there are some male participants.
Lin pointed out that as a precious Chinese cultural legacy, the art of flower arrangement was popular in the Sui and Tang dynasties (589-907 A.D.), when it was first introduced to Japan.
Wild flowers and natural raw materials are endowed with new vitality when they are arranged artistically, giving an elegant and refined look to the most mundane surroundings.
In addition to spreading the art to people from all walks of life in the Republic of China, the association is dedicated to improving the art so as to open up new vistas, and to promoting friendship among its members through their common love for flowers.
