Mu Kung, king of Chin doted over his daughter, Nung Yu, and determined that her husband had to be of the very best caliber. One night, Nung Yu dreamed about a man calling himself the guardian angel of Mount Hwa, who enchanted her with his flute playing. When the king's men found a flutist named Hsiao Shih in the area of the mountain, they brought him to the court. Nung Yu realized he was the man she had seen in her dreams, and the two were married. Six months later, as they were playing flutes in the moonlight, they saw a phoenix and a dragon descend before them. Hsiao Shih told Nung Yu it was time to return, and the two rose into the sky, Hsiao on the back of the dragon and Nung Yu riding on the phoenix. Since Hsiao is regarded as the ideal son-in-law, to describe someone today as a "son-in- law riding on a dragon" is regarded as a high compliment.
