Lee Teng-hui and Li Yuan-zu were elected as the eighth president and vice president of the Republic of China on March 21 and 22 at the eighth plenary session of the National Assembly.
Upon learning of their elections to office, President Lee and Vice President Li both indicated that they would do their utmost during the next six years to strive for the development of constitutional democratic government, for economic progress, for social order and stability and for the elevation of the nation's cultural life to meet the hopes and expectations of the public.
