South Africa's first ambassador to the Republic of China, William Pretorius, presented his credentials to President C. K. Yen at the Presidential Office on May 25. The Republic of China and South Africa upgraded their relations from the consular to the ambassadorial level on April 26.
Brig. Gen. Leslie R. Forney, Jr., newly appointed chief of the U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group to the Republic of China, and Mrs. Forney, arrived in Taipei on May 26. They were greeted at the airport by Gen. Lai Ming-tong, chief of the General Staff, Republic of China Armed Forces and Mrs. Lai. Gen. Forney was born in Tientsin, China and speaks fluent Chinese. He served two previous tours of duty with MAAG, ROC.
A statue of the late President Chiang Kai-shek was unveiled at a park in Tama City, near Tokyo, on May 15. The 6-meter statue was presented by the Sino-Japanese People-to-People Goodwill Association. It expresses Japanese gratitude to President Chiang for his magnanimous policy toward Japan and Japanese prisoners of war at the end of World War Ⅱ. The base of the statue is made of marble.
