Costa Rica, located at the southernmost part of Central America, has an area of over 50,000 sq. km. and a population of 2,300,000.
The east coast overlooks the Caribbean and the western shore, the Pacific Ocean. The climate is warm, and resources abundant.
Ever since establishment of diplomatic relations in 1941, China and Costa Rica have maintained a close friendship. Economic cooperation and trade development have been actively promoted. Visits by high-ranking leaders have been frequent. The head of the ROC cabinet recently led a delegation to Costa Rica for discussions on aspects of mutual cooperation between the two countries.
In October, the President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Carazo Odio, paid a five-day official visit to the ROC. The 55 year-old President, who holds an MA in economics and is also an agricultural expert, explored economic development efforts and programs for agricultural progress. The two countries, beginning in 1974, have alternated in hosting ministerial-level meetings to discuss economic technology and means of improving agricultural out-put.
While in Taiwan, the Costa Rican President toured outlying districts of Taipei where he visited with farmers. At an evening banquet held to welcome him, he remarked, "I seriously believe that a country's foundations are rooted in its farms. If, as I have seen today, farmers are happy and satisfied, then this proves the strength of the country."
President Rodrigo Carazo Odio attended the ROC national day celebration as a distinguished guest, and reviewed the military parade. He commented on the advanced military equipment and the marching discipline of the troops. Noting the cheering crowds which enlivened the celebrations, he said freedom showed itself deeply rooted on Taiwan.
On his last day here, a joint communique was issued in which both countries promised to work together in the interests of the free world. His trip here further cemented ties between the ROC and Costa Rica. President Rodrigo Carazo Odio said, "Our countries are located in two different places, but the stand taken by both of our countries against Communism is the same. Regarding this, we are of one mind."
