There once was an old man who lived in the mountains collecting herbal medicines.
One day, the sounds of horses and human voices pierced the tranquil mountains.
"What could that be?"
There was a young boy huffing and puffing as he climbed the rocks.
He shot into the forest as if running from something.
When the boy saw the old man, he immediately ran over and bowed to the ground.
"Your face looks green! What's wrong?"
"Old grandfather, someone is after me, please help me!"
"A traitorous minister lied to the Emperor that my father was going to rebel. The Emperor believed what the traitorous minister said, and sent soldiers to surround our home and kill us all."
"You are the only son of the Ko family. If even you are killed, the Ko family line will come to an end. Escape quickly!"
"Although I got out, I was discovered by the soldiers, and now they are here. Please save me!"
"Alas. The Ko family is known to everyone to be a loyal family of great repute."
"Quickly, come with me."
The old man hid the child in a cave deep in the mountains.
The soldiers searched for several days, but couldn't find a trace, and they had no choice but to go back.
"Do you have any place to go now?"
"My family and relatives have all been captured. you are my savior and benefactor, old grandfather, please take me in."
"If that's the way you want it, then you can come with me. But every day I must go into the mountains to gather Chinese medicine, and you won't be able to have such an easy life as you did at home in the past."
"Please don't give it another thought. I'm not afraid of any hardship."
Thereafter, the young boy followed the old man into the mountains every day to gather herbal medicines. The old man usually collected a certain variety of grass which is especially effective in curing fever, thirst, or diarrhea (its Latin name is pueraria lobata ohwi).
After several years, the old man died. The only son of the Ko family had by this time grown to adulthood.
That herbal medicine had no name of its own, so he christened this medicine "Ko root," because the "roots" of the "Ko family" had survived.
