With an elevation of 3,416 meters, Hohuan Shan is among the highest mountains in Taiwan. The average temperature in the area is 14 degrees Centigrade (57 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer, and 5 degrees C. (41 F.) in winter, about 10 to 15 degrees C. lower than at sea level. Since Taiwan has a subtropical climate, Hohuan Shan is a popular place for visitors, who come to see the snow in winter and to escape from the heat of the plains in summer.
After a three-hour drive from Taichung in Central Taiwan, visitors arrive at Tsuifeng, where they must obtain a permit to enter the mountain area. They can then take a small bus to Kunyang before walking the final section to Wulin. During the four months from December to early spring, the mountain is often covered with snow, and the scenery resembles that in northern China. During this season, visitors can indulge in all kinds of winter sports, including skiing, snowballing or making snowmen.
In 1966, the Taiwan Forestry Bureau built the Snow Pine Hostel at a cost of NT$3 million (US$75,000) in an attempt to develop the tourist industry in the area. During the season, the National Skiing Association of the Republic of China uses the hostel to provide room and board for its members. A ski slope with cable lift and other modern facilities was also provided for trainees. The growing number of tourists soon caused the Snow Pine Hostel to become inadequate, and the Forestry Bureau decided to build a new Hohuan Shan Hostel to accommodate more visitors. These had grown to include participants in the programs organized by the China Youth Corps and the military winter training center. The bureau, also set up a 400-meter ski path connecting Wulin with the valley floor.
In summertime, Hohuan Shan, with its cool fresh air, verdant meadows, lush trees, blue sky and snow-white clouds attracts people anxious to escape from the bustle and heat of the cities. Hohuan Shan is certainly a mountain for all seasons. The extensive and majestic mountain range is an ideal place for youth to receive physical training to prepare them to meet challenges later in life and broaden their outlook.
