In Taiwan, admiring cherry blossoms has grown into a popular pastime of late. The season starts as far south as Alishan and Xitou and progresses northward to Sun Moon Lake, Wuling, and eventually to Tamsui. From late December to March or April, a succession of cherry varieties come into flower. It begins with the Taiwan cherry, followed by Oshima, Yoshino, and Pink Lady cherries, spreading from south to north in an expanse of bright red spring scenery.
Flowers are seasonal, and consequently so are the times to admire them. The life stories that have played out under the blossoming cherry tree fall into our minds like flower petals, deeply imprinting themselves in the depths of our consciousness.
