On July 1, a trainer and four students from Hualien’s National Dong Hwa University set out on foot from Taipei’s Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall on a 24-day circuit of Taiwan aimed at raising environmental awareness and promoting low-carbon lifestyles.
The students argue that environmental protection is much like physical conditioning: the process may be difficult, but perseverance earns fantastic results.
Local jogging clubs ran with them on each segment of their route, suggesting that their joining of exercise with environmentalism may coalesce into a new Taiwanese environmental movement.
How can we do nothing to stem the disappearance of such beautiful scenery? As the runners make their way along the Taipei-Yilan highway, Guishan Island is visible in the distance.
