The Taiwan International Orchid Show, held annually in Houbi, Tainan, by the Taiwan Orchid Plantation, is one of the world’s three most celebrated orchid shows, the other two taking place in Tokyo and the UK. The event is an excellent platform from which to show off the power and beauty of Taiwan’s agricultural and biological technology.
The individual grand champion of this year’s show, a huge Dendrobium, makes a fine example. It was developed from a natural hybrid of Dendrobium miyakei and Dendrobium bullenianum, and sports over 30 branches, 219 flower stalks, and a total of 6,351 gorgeous orange blooms with red stripes. Its huge number of flowers and its splendid colors made it stand out from among the 1,500 individual entries, drawing the admiration of people from home and abroad. At the show there were also 338 new, never-before-seen orchid varieties. The excellence of growing technology was everywhere to be seen at the Taiwan International Orchid Show.
This year’s orchid show drew in a total of more than 268,000 people from 36 countries, including over 3,000 foreign buyers. Altogether, NT$9.26 billion in overseas orders were placed, beating out last year’s figure.
True to the theme of the show, Taiwan’s orchid growing industry will continue to blossom with endless possibilities.
