Every year, during the third and fourth months of the lunar calendar, the goddess Mazu travels Taiwan with her entourage, touring each area and offering her blessings. Normally this road would be full of traffic vehicular and pedestrian, but today the only sight is these mighty, martial gods traveling alongside Mazu, their countenance inspiring awe and making potential onlookers avert their eyes, not wanting to lock eyes with them. To the side we can even catch a glimpse of the god Erlang asking for a cigarette from the crew to satisfy his craving!
This road has become a place where man and god meet, as do man and man. In this crowd everyone, rich and poor alike, kneels in thanks to Mazu one after another. Each hopes to earn the favor of the goddess through this show of faith, and to make the road that lies ahead a smoother one.
