Butterflies are among the most beautiful of insects. Besides carrying pollen and aiding the propagation of plants, butterflies help develop tourism in Taiwan. They can be turned into specimens and craft works for decoration. Taiwan produces the largest number of butterfly handicraft items in the world. The good climate makes the island province of the Republic of China a good breeding ground for many kinds of insects. So far, more than 400 species of butterflies have been found.
Taiwan has long been known as "The Kingdom of Butterflies." Many species found on the island are among the world's most beautiful with striking shapes and colors. They also are among the highest in reproduction. Weso Chen, an entomologist, recently has found a wonderful spot--The Valley of Violet Butterflies--with more than 250 species. The Valley was literally full of butterflies fluttering here and there. Anyone visiting this valley will be fascinated. It is very peaceful, complete with flowers and other plants. The environment here provides an ideal locale for the breeding and propagation of butterflies. Recently, the Taiwan Provincial Government decided to develop this wonderland into a national park. It is expected to become one of the most striking and attractive sights of Taiwan. "The Hill of Cicadas," adjacent to the Valley of Violet Butterflies is another interesting place to visit. The cicadas sing in unison from spring to autumn, contributing to a fantastic scene.
