Ships are indispensable to Taiwan's transportation, fishery and foreign trade because Taiwan is an island. Shipbuilding is thus very important to the people's livelihood. In 1945-48 Taiwan was capable of building barely more than 300 tons of ships annually. Since 1949 the shipbuilding industry has gradually developed under the government's active support and encouragement. It centers around three major public enterprises: Taiwan Shipbuilding Corporation, Taiwan Machinery Corporation and the Kaohsiung Shipyard of China Ship Building Corporation. The rest of the industry is small scale. It was due to the efforts of Taiwan Shipbuilding Corporation that the building of big modern ships began in the past ten years, and the Republic of China became known in international shipbuilding circles.
Taiwan Shipbuilding Corporation, located on Ho-ping Island in Keelung City, has extensive facilities for shipbuilding, ship repair and machinery manufacturing. During the last decade, TSBC has built more than 50 modern ocean-going merchant ships of various kinds. It also has plans to construct branch shipyards at Taichung, Hualien and Suao harbors. Taiwan's shipbuilding industry has made great progress. It is now capable of building oil tankers, general cargo vessels, bulk carriers, fishing boats and yachts and full container vessels. Its future is considered very promising.
