At the end of the Eastern Han dynasty, a man from Yingchuan named Sima Hui excelled at identifying talent in others. He lived for a long time in Jingzhou, where he recommended that Liu Bei hire various brilliant figures, including the military strategists Zhuge Liang and Pang Tong.
But because it was a dark era, when society was riven by sharp political differences, he adopted a muddled demeanor. When others spoke to him about some matter--whether they described something joyous or tragic, or offered an opinion he shared or opposed--Sima would always say, "Good."
One day he met a close acquaintance on the street, who asked how his health was, and he replied, "Good."
Another day, when a good friend painfully spoke of the death of a son, Sima unexpectedly responded, "Very good."
Sima's wife waited for the friend to leave before speaking: "People think you are a virtuous man, and so they trust you and open their hearts to you. Yet when someone tells you that his son has died, you say it's good. What kind of response is that?"
Sima Hui calmly replied, "Good. What you say is also very good!" His angry wife didn't know whether to laugh or to cry.
