The Republic of China jubilantly celebrated its 66th founding anniversary on New Year's Day of 1977. A gathering was held at the Presidential Office with President Yen Chia-kan presiding. President Yen, delivering a message, urged the people, military and civilians alike, to develop "resolute will power," "pure morality" and "a strong sense of responsibility." He also called upon the people to seize the opportunities to create a new era, to achieve the goal of recovering the mainland China, and share with the whole Chinese people the blessings of freedom, equality, stability and well-being. The foreign envoys accredited to the Republic of China presented their greetings at the Presidential Office. On this happy occasion, many mass weddings were held. The newlywed couples will easily remember their anniversary!
Travelers were not held back by a chilly drizzle during the three-day New Year's vacation. Holiday-celebrators everywhere turned the railway stations and the bus terminals into solid seas of humanity. Many people travelled to visit relatives and friends. Communications workers cancelled their holidays voluntarily to provide better service in the hope that everyone might have a happy time. Streets were filled with crowds. Department stores, theatres, supermarkets, restaurants and tea houses were crowded with customers. Many exhibitions were held throughout the island. People visited such displays as flower, painting, sculpture and book exhibitions. At the beginning of the year, everyone has his own beautiful plans and wishes. Our common goal is the recovery of the Chinese mainland.
