The process and results of the national legislative supplementary elections held last month won broad affirmation among both Chinese and foreigners.
In fact, the ruling Kuomintang, or Nationalist Party, decided last March to initiate a series of political reforms, including lifting martial law and opening up the formation of new political parties, which culminated in the recent election.
An editorial in the New York Times said that the outlook for the reforms is good, and the Hong Kong Times pointed out that the developments make the Republic of China on Taiwan a fore runner in political reform among the five great areas in the world where Chinese live--mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, and Singapore--and worthy of study by Chinese in other areas.
"Political reform" is this month's cover story.
