On March 21, incumbent President Chiang Ching-kuo won unanimous re-election to a second Six-year term. Not only did the overwhelming vote announce President Chiang's enduring popularity, it represented a vote of confidence for his upcoming term of leadership. Under the able leadership of the president, the citizens of the Republic of China can look forward to the next six years with hope and pride.
One of the president's most outstanding characteristics is his deep concern for the welfare of his constituents. During the past few years the president has made many excursions to all areas of the island. With a genuine concern for the common man, President Chiang has travelled into all sectors of society to get a first hand look at local conditions and meet face-to-face with the people. Be it a visit to a farm or an inspection of a high school, the president makes a special effort to meet with local residents.
Upon the advice of his physician, the president has curtailed his visits to different parts of the island in the past year.
Thus it was with great delight that the residents of the Kinmen and P'enghu archipelagos greeted President Chiang on his recent visits. He was seen once again smiling and mixing happily among the local residents. Television audiences at home on Taiwan were gratified to see that the president is enjoying good health.
On March 11, under rainy skies, the president and his entourage arrived on Kinmen island. The president and his party spent two days inspecting local military installations and greeting crowds. While he was on Kinmen, the president visited the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Forest Grove where he planted a tree to commemorate the 59th anniversary of Dr. Sun's death.
The president followed this trip with a visit to the scenic P'enghu archipelago on March 29. In addition to his official inspection schedule, the president took time out to visit Makung harbor and mix with island residents. He also paid a visit to the Ch'ing Hsin Restaurant where he presented the owner, Lu Chiu-p'ing, with four bottles of Kaoliang wine.
His recent re-election and visits to the islands confirms once more that the president is a man of the people.
