Elizabeth Taylor said that she plans to make another trip to Taiwan in the near future. The Kinma Award presentation ceremony was given extra glamor by her attendance to present the prize for best picture of the year. During her seven-day stay in Taiwan, everyone was swept up in what became known as the "Liz craze." Fans mobbed the legendary superstar wherever she went. She was deeply moved and surprised at the warm and friendly welcome she received. Before her departure on Nov. 9, Miss Taylor said: "I love your country. In the future, if my husband, Senator Warner, can spare the time, I would like to make another trip to Taiwan with him." A highlight of her stay was a trip to Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan. After viewing the well-known beauty spot from Taiwan Provincial Governor Lin Yang-kang's private helicopter (pictures 1-3), she said: "It's beautiful." As Miss Taylor loves Chinese food (favorite dishes egg rolls and chicken fried noodles), Dr. and Mrs. James Soong presented a Chinese cookbook to her. Liz with Min Chi, Chairman of the Kinma Award ceremony (6) Miss Taylor has long known about the inexpensive but exquisite masterworks in Chinese porcelain available in Taiwan, and so she bought a large quantity from the Handicraft Promotion Center (4). On the day she left, Miss Taylor visited the National Palace Museum (5), and was awed by its wealth of treasures. Picture (8) shows her being interviewed by reporters, and (7) shows her with a painting of a classical Chinese beauty, which was presented to her as a gift.
The tall and handsome John Philip Law was another distinguished guest in the Kinma Award presentation ceremony. At the invitation of the Central Motion Picture Corporation, Law came to Taiwan to play a leading role in the Mandarin film, "The Pioneers, "based on the work of the early settlers in Taiwan. In this film Law plays the role of a foreign engineer assisting people in Taiwan to explore for oil. Since he is required to speak Mandarin in the film, he practices the language diligently every day. At the presentation ceremony, he answered in Chinese some of the questions put to him, winning thunderous applause, though his attempt was somewhat awkward. He said he enjoyed time spent with his co-workers in the "Pioneers," and he hopes the cooperation will continue in the future.
Since graduating from Cambridge University in England, the internationally known actor, James Mason, has dedicated his life to the theater and cinema. During his stay in Taiwan, his elegant English manners left a deep impression on his fans. Mr. and Mrs. Mason stayed at Hsitou forest resort for one night and toured Sun Moon Lake half a day. They were deeply impressed with the beautiful scenery in central Taiwan, the happiness and peace of rural life, the Chinese people's enthusiasm and politeness, and the cultural heritage to be found at the National Palace Museum. Since Mason is also an enthusiast of Chinese cuisine, President Chiang invited the couple to have breakfast with him when they visit Taiwan next time.
