The "weekend" is no longer a new term for the people of the Republic of China. It is part of their life. On weekends, students or young people gather together and travel from the cities to the country for such recreation as a cookout. They sing songs and talk with each other. Or they may go mountain climbing to enjoy nature and the green landscapes of hills and fields. Workers, too, often invite friends to join them in spending a day at a nearby scenic spot. The entire family, old and young, may take a picnic lunch and find a quiet corner on the grass, under a tree or along a beach for a good time together.
Such ways of spending the weekend were once too costly for many people. They now have become popular mainly because of Taiwan's rapid economic development. Because of our economic construction in recent years, the average family income has increased sharply. The general living standard has risen and the gap between the rich and the poor has narrowed. Basic living conditions have improved. There are more public and private buses and coaches in operation. The number of motorcycles and private cars has increased. Travel on the roads is easy and convenient and weekends out of town have become more common.
The government of the Republic of China is building a model province in Taiwan under the Three Principles of the People proclaimed by the founding father, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. It is building a society which reflects the Principle of People's Livelihood. In this society everybody enjoys freedom and security, and obtains the fullest measure of leisure and happiness possible. The material aspects of life, such as clothing, food, housing and transportation, are dealt with, and the psychological dimension of education and happiness as well. With work, rest and play, one will be able to keep the body and mind in balance and in true health. The government has planned the preservation of scenic areas, the development of forest tourism and sports activities for the benefit of every citizen. The purpose is to make possible beautiful weekends and a hopeful tomorrow for everyone.
