The Republic of China's Ten Major Construction Projects, after three years' continuous, tireless efforts of the whole nation, are showing results. Most of the construction work has proceeded smoothly, and even exceeded the set schedules. The Ten Major Construction Projects mark a milestone toward a new economic development and moving the Republic of China into the ranks of developed nations. At the beginning of planning, we were confronted by financial, labor and technical problems. These difficulties have never shaken our determination. The whole nation, with firm confidence, renders all-out assistance to overcome these obstacles.
The work schedules of the Ten Major Construction Projects as of early March are as follows: 80.76 per cent of the North-South Freeway was completed, the Steel Mill 80.66 per cent, Taoyuan Airport 47.98 per cent, the second stage of construction work of Taichung Port 22.81 per cent, Railroad Electrification 69.06 per cent, Suao-Hualien Railroad 32.33 per cent, Suao Port 49.20 per cent, Power Plants 80.52 per cent and Petrochemical Industry 84.12 per cent. The Kaohsiung Shipyard is already fully completed. The government plans to take advantage of labor force, resources, techniques and experiences used in the Ten Major Construction Projects for the new Six-Year Economic Development Plan. The projects will complement each other and produce the highest effects of each investment. Our government has long-term plan for each construction project. The Ten Major Construction Projects are only a good beginning for the total plan. We will continue to spare no effort toward reaching the final goals of mainland recovery and reconstruction.
