Wang Yung-ching is perhaps the best known industrialist in the Republic of China. He is chairman of the huge 14-member Formosa Plastics Group, which includes Nan Ya Plastics Corp., one of the largest plastics manufacturers in the world.
But like many of Taiwan's successful industrialists, Wang Yung-ching was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. In his childhood Wang's family was poor and he was unable to receive a formal education. In fact, Wang still remembers vividly his father's concern lest a member of the family require medical attention. The reason was that in those days there was a shortage of good doctors in Taiwan and medical fees were too high for the average wage earner.
Despite his lack of formal education, Wang Yung-ching's entrepreneurial genius enabled him to prosper under Taiwan's free enterprise system. But Wang never forgot his father's worries. When Wang's friends suggested that a piece of his Taipei real estate would be a perfect site for a tourist hotel, he rejected the idea upon his mother's advice. Instead, he decided to establish a first-class hospital aimed at providing reasonably priced medical service to the public. Not surprisingly, Wang named the hospital the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, in memory of his father, Wang Chang-gung.
Although the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital is a member of the Formosa Plastics Group, its guiding principle, unlike the group's other enterprises, is not primarily profit. However, the hospital has borrowed many of Wang Yung-ching's unique management practices to ensure that the hospital's resources are best utilized to serve the public. In fact, some administrative staff at the hospital acquired their managerial skills at Nan Ya Plastics Corp.
Medical fees are about the same at Chang Gung as at most public hospitals. Because the hospital is not subsidized by the government, Wang says "the best way to make ends meet is to reduce costs and raise efficiency." At Chang Gung, efficiency is achieved by a minimum of redtape in administration, and rational use of the best equipment to give as many patients as possible fast and high-standard treatment.
Aware that a first-class hospital requires more than good buildings and equipment, Wang encouraged the best doctors in Taiwan to work at Chang Gung. And Wang also regularly reminds the Chang Gung staff to be friendly and helpful to patients and their relatives too. Attention to such details has won Chang Gung a top reputation in its six short years of operation.
