The Machinery industry is a basis of industrialization of Taiwan. It also has close connections with improvement of the industrial structure and development of heavy and sophisticated industries. The direction at the present stage of the Republic of China's industrial development is in change from labor-intensive industry to those capital-intensive and technology-intensive. The development and growth of the machinery industry will play an important role in the structure change. For years, under guidance of the government and efforts of manufacturers, the machinery industry has made great progress in production, facilities and marketing. In 1976, the volume of machinery exports was more than US$50 million. It is expected that the growth of machinery industry will increase with stability.
Under the Six-Year Economic Development Plan, emphasis will be placed on guidance of the machinery industry to usher it to a new development stage. The items of guidance will include: (1) promoting exports of package plants of machinery; (2) manufacturing high efficiency equipment; (3) developing various styles of diesel engines; (4) creating anti-pollution facilities; (5) improving the basic processing of refined and cast products; (6) developing sophisticated machine tools; (7) introducing new technology; (8) establishing experimental centers for sophisticated cogwheels; (9) supporting machinery products exports; (10) offering special loans to the machinery manufacturers; and (11) stepping up of service-after-sales. Most of the exported machinery products are machine tools such as lathes, drilling and punch machines. The export volume of textile, chemical, printing, paper, plastic and wood products machines, as well as agricultural and metal processing machines also has increased year by year. The chief export areas are Southeast Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States. Our policy for development of the machinery industry will take further steps to usher in new technology, develop sophisticated products, improve methods of management, strengthen quality control, raise productive capacity and enlarge the international market, all are parts of helping the ROC reach the highly developed industrial level.
