To keep pace with increased traffic resulting from expanding population and economic development, the Republic of China's postal system has been largely mechanized. The zip code system was put into effect in 1970. Electronic sorting machines using the postal zone number system were installed in Taipei and Kaohsiung and will be gradually set up in other major post offices in Taiwan. Computers are used to handle postal savings for accuracy and efficiency. Our postal service has entered a new era.
To meet increasing needs, a Mechanized Parcel Post Processing Center now handles packages in Taipei. Because of the far-reaching availability of postal establishments and home delivery service in Taiwan, parcel post service has expanded significantly, particularly for mailing small items of clothes, food, gifts, tools, sample goods and drugs.
1976 is the 80th anniversary of the founding of China's postal service. Our postal system has long been well known for its speed, safety, low postage rates and convenient services. These include evening post offices in Taipei and Kaohsiung, packing and sealing services, prompt delivery, stamp collection centers, the establishment of a postal museum and the sponsorship of postage stamp exhibitions.
