Battle City: The Story
In the world imagined by Chang Li-Ren, the first installment, The Glory of Taiwan, follows the protagonist Zhiqiang, who enlists in the military after his confession of love is rejected. He subsequently goes missing and is mistakenly reported to be a terrorist. A chain of events later culminates in a nuclear disaster in a city, mockingly dubbed “The Glory of Taiwan” (the character for “glory” also means “bright light”).
The second installment, Economic Miracle, depicts Taiwan after the disaster. The island is placed under the administration of JJ, an international corporation, and transformed into an “economic farm demonstration zone.” Its people are treated as “economic animals,” working and providing services all day to earn virtual currency.
The third installment, Formosa, shifts the story to a science-fiction future. Earth has become a lost world, and its people live under the oppressive rule of a mysterious figure known as the “Sovereign of Flesh.” Many humans have been transformed into cyborgs and must fight for survival in a brutal, unforgiving arena.
