Compared to the Sung Dynasty emperor and empress portraits appearing in the June and July issues of Sinorama last year, this Yuan Dynasty portrait seems less refined. But the facial features, clothing and adornments adopted by the Mongols are all represented in a realistic way. This painting is of great value to historians and students of fashion.
The tall crown worn by the empress has the effect of elongating her rather round face, and helps to bring out her noble character. The crown is decorated with pearls and a rare red silk brocade which can be seen clearly on the empress' left shoulder.
The portrait also illustrates the Mongol style of decorating the eyebrows with long and bold lines, and provides important evidence of how clothing and make-up styles have changed over the ages.
