Suspension of Bond on Instruments and Samples Brought in by Foreign Visitors
The Ministry of Economic Affairs has decided to replace the often disputed regulation requiring foreign visitors to pay a bond on instruments and samples they bring into the country with a simple passport and computer check.
An official at the ministry reported that this change will be made to facilitate the passage of foreign visitors through customs. It will be implemented upon the completion of the coordination of computer systems.
The new regulation will allow such things as photographic equipment, samples, materials for scientific research, certain tools, and theatrical costumes and props to be taken into the country without bond.
Visitors May Bring 62.5 Grams of Gold into the Country Duty-Free
The Fiscal and Monetary Authority has agreed to allow visitors to the ROC to bring in 62.5 grams of gold duty-free. The tax on amounts over 62.5 grams will be 1.25 percent.
A high-level official indicated that gold jewelry will be considered clothing, and will not be taxed. Taking gold out of the country, however, will still be prohibited. In addition, dealers in gold will still have to pay a 5 percent tax.
Hong Kong Residents Can Apply for Entry and Residency Permits Simultaneously
The Bureau of Entry and Exit of the Ministry of the Interior has indicated that Hong Kong residents wishing to establish residency in the ROC may apply for entry and residency permits simultaneously. Applicants may use their entry permits to apply for ROC identification cards from the census office.
If Hong Kong residents still have business in Hong Kong, they may retain their Hong Kong identification card and Hong Kong entry permit. Overseas Chinese considered "outstanding patriots" by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission may receive a one-year multiple-entry permit, the fee for which will be reduced by half.
The validity period of the entry permit for frequent visitors from Hong Kong has been extended to two years. In addition, Hong Kong residents may now apply for an entry permit upon arriving in the ROC
The requirements for guarantors for Hong Kong residents have also been relaxed, extending the scope of people and organizations who may be guarantors.
