Gentlemen:
Over a hundred years ago, the first Chinese immigrants landed in this country and made contributions to agricultural development. Today's existing large tea plantations, as well as our famous Chinese cuisine, are part of the great heritage we share in our adopted country that makes us, as Chinese descendants, feel very proud of our ancestors.
Excluding US territories and possessions, Peru perhaps has the highest density of Chinese outside China. We make up as much as 10 percent of the Peruvian population (about 24 million inhabitants), and are scattered all over this country.
People of Chinese descent can be found in many important political, economic and social activities; in the highest offices of government, management, and local and international commerce; in industry and finance. Our sons and daughters students are usually first in their classes.
This is why, Mr. Editor, my family and I look forward to the information about China contained in your every issue. It satisfies our desire for news that keeps us and our hearts close to China.
Thank you for your spirit of integration and cooperation, which we share here in our Peruvian-Chinese community.
Sincerely,
Juan F. Yon Li, Peru
